Life Story for Valeda Mertens

Valeda Mertens
Early Tuesday morning of October 3, 2017, Valeda Mertens, 101, formerly of Park Row, Cadyville, NY, peacefully breathed her parting breath at her niece’s home (Wallace Hill Rd, Plattsburgh), encircled in the love, prayers and care of her nieces and nephew, Permelia Provost and spouse Gary, Sharon Provost and spouse Carl, and Felix Desso, (spouse Shevawn (Sanger) Desso, under the assistance of Hospice of the North County.
Valeda was born in Plattsburgh, NY on April 14, 1916 into a loving, faith-filled and hard working farm family, the daughter of Felix and Permelia (Plumadore) Caron.
As a very young child, she attended the one-room school house maintaining her studies all while working strenuously daily on the family farm (both on the Wallace Hill Rd). In her teen and young adult years she worked at both the family farm and Diamond Paper Plant, and later, Georgia-Pacific Paper Plant (both in Plattsburgh.)
On April 6, 1946, she married William “Bill” F. Mertens. She and Bill moved to Jamestown, NY where they were employed at Automatic Voting Machine factory; she on the assembly line. Upon retirement, they returned to the area, purchasing a home in Cadyville, NY. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill, on May 19, 1998. She was also predeceased by three infant siblings; Electa Caron, Raymond Caron and Norman Caron, as well niece Theresa Trombley-Adams, great-niece Cherry (Caron) Ladouceur, and nephews Raymond and Norman Chappel.
Throughout her life, she remained lovingly close to her siblings, being predeceased by all of them; Bernadette Caron (1939), Irene (Caron) Chappel (1957), Edmund Caron, Sr. (1989), and her dearest sister-companions, Isola (Caron) Normandin (2003), and Ramona (Caron) Desso (2014).
Valeda, having been the remaining Matriarch of our family, leaves us the legacy of love faith, and example of resilience; of true graciousness, gentleness and humility. She never spoke a harsh or mean word of anyone. She always put the “other person” first. She was sweet… with a ready, bright smile, warm disposition and a welcoming hug. She was unpretentious, and good. She lived a life of gratitude, continually thankful for deed done for her, including those of her neighbor James Cooper. The base and foundation of her goodness was God. She entrusted her entire life and increasing infirmities in constant prayer to Jesus. We her survivors have been graced by her existence… These survivors being: Great-nephew Carl Provost, Jr. (C.J.) and companion, Amy Menard and their children Dylan Ferrigno and Sarah Provost: Great-niece Jessica Provost: great-niece Jill Provost and her companion Scott Pelkey: Great-Niece Tricia (Provost) Myatt and spouse Dan Myatt and their sons Nathaniel and Joshua: Great-nephew Corey Desso and daughters Bailey and Marissa, and son Liam: Great-nephew Jason Desso and daughter Emily: Great-nephew Joel and Tashara (Brown) Desso: Extended family Brian and Laurie LaPointe and sons Sky and Kinson. Nephew Leeward and Geraldine (LeClaire) Caron: Nephew Edmund Caron, Jr. and companion Darlene Solano: nieces of the Normandin family…Ede Rachlis, Ethel Barkley, Bernadette Alexander, Alice Senecal, Barbara Norman, and Wendy (McSweeney) Provost… nephews Charles, Philip, James and Claude Normandin: Nephew Maynard Chappel, and Niece Geraldine Chappel: And dear Ralph Corron and family.
